What Search Engine Your Blog Use?

Every blog has a search widget. Usually it is the default widget which comes with blog platform Wordpress, Blogger or other. But you have an option to use another search widget, or maybe combining two search widgets.

As default search does not give much to your blog, alternatives can give you much more. While being active blogger (for about month and a half :) I found, or maybe collided with three alternative search widgets, who, they claim, can give you big benefit in traffic or even in revenue. Here it is:

  • Lijit Search
  • Quintura Site Search
  • Google Custom Search

Lijit search

First I added Lijit search, cause I saw it in http://probloger.net. It attracted me, cause it has own tag cloud which was generated by most common search keywords. Lijit claims it will help you to:

Increase searches by 2.5 - 5x
Engage readers and raise pageviews 5% or more
Grab the 30% of your audience that you’re missing

My results show that it increased my blog readiness by 5%, but it had worked only for 2 weeks. So, I must give it more time to reveal the real truth about benefits it will provide to my blog.

Your blog readers can search within:

  • your blog;
  • content - the places you create content like Digg, flickr, Youtube or Twitter or other places;
  • network content -  various sources you decide to include, like other blogs or Lijit users;
  • web.

Google ads feed is added in every search, so you can earn money if reader would go through it (Lijit will share their profit with you). So integrate this widget and increase your blog readiness. Also, add me in your search network (my profile http://www.lijit.com/users/skyroja) and contact me when added, I will add your blog to my network.

You can place Lijit search  as a widget in a sidebar, or use it as your blog default search engine. You can set this option in Wordpress by going Settings-> Lijit and set it like showed in the picture below.

Lijit Configuration Options

Quintura Site Search

I saw it only today, but it amazed me from the beginning. You can try it in the right side of my blog. Pete Cashmore introduces it as ”advanced visual-based search and analytics solution, content publishers can increase site usage while creating new ad revenues”. And I believe it can be true (another option for your blog monetization!). Here is explanation from creators of Quintura:

How it works
Visual-based search interface. Users visualize search query and contextually related keywords, and dynamically refine search results by interacting and hovering over keywords in the Quintura search cloud. When users interact with the cloud, they can navigate deeper and deeper within the cloud layers, finding the information they are searching for.

Quintura claims that this search will help you to:

    Increase in search usage: 30—100%
    Increase in searches made: 100%
    Increase in page-views: 30%

It is possible to use this search engine as a Flash or JavaScript object. You just need to embed it in your blog. You can use it in three ways:

  • as a Minicloud like I use;
  • as a Full-size cloud;
  • as a Title searchbar.

I will be using Quintura as second search engine, cause it has less features and it is still new service which must be researched.

Google Custom Search

This search engine is most valuable for those bloggers who have blog network. You can configure it to include search results from your blogs. In this way you can lead your reader to another relative post, without loosing him.

But if reader didn’t find anything, he might click the ad. I think these ads are valued high because they are served in Google search and not in Google search partners. Therefore you will earn more.

Also, there is an option to use search without ads, if you are intended on educational purposes.

So what would you say? Is it worth integrating external search engine or two, or just sit and enjoy the default search engine? Or you know another valuable search engine? Share your opinion.

Later I will post my experience about using 2 external search engines (or maybe I will go crazy and will implement third one), so subscribe to my full RSS feed or by Email.

    Hey Robertas,

    This is a great start, will stay in touch to read your findings. To date, P.U.B. is not happy with the Lijit option simply due to their decision to attack the bloggers union instead of just come clean with what they make and what % Publishers get.

    P.U.B. is moving to investigate Quintura and will post what transparency we get from them.

    Thanks,
