Today, I was going to hit 1000 Twitter followers line (you can join me on Twitter, too). But suddenly, the number of followers has decreased by 62 followers…
62 followers – quite big loss for one day, since my Twitter followers were steady coming in. You can check my Twitter followers count graph.
And then I noticed that the same amount of Twitter members was removed from the list of people I follow – equally 62 members! The first idea that I came to – does Twitter has cleaned their members database from suspended accounts?
The idea that Twitter should delete all these suspended account was arising from the time I started using Twitter frequently (from the 24 of November, 2008). I started following many Twitters within blogging category, used mr.Tweet service to discover who are the great influencers and followers in your Twitter network. And some of the users I wanted to follow were suspended. The first question that topped to my mind – why they are still available, why they are not deleted.
And that is true. Finally, Twitter removed suspended accounts. Therefore, my followers list and list of people who I follow were reduced with 62 Twitter members.
Here is what Twitter support reported:
A long awaited bug fix is going out this week: suspended accounts are being removed from everyone’s “followers” pages.
Expect to see an extreme drop in followers numbers in many cases, as we’ve suspended thousands of accounts for spam over the past few months. Your followers number will now accurately reflect the number of legitimate followers you have on Twitter.
Thanks to @stopthespam and everyone who has followed Twitter’s @spam account and direct messaged us with names of spammers. With your help, we’re making improvements toward keeping Twitter spam-free!

I created several Twitter accounts, for several different online activitiesI have, and Twitter suspended these accounts before I could post anything more than Merry Christmas to a few of my clients
The reason? I might possibly be thinking of using those accounts as spam. There was no evidence of spam, and I begged customer service to reconsider, but I was finally told on another online support site that my account would probably not be restated. Nice, huh? I think this is one of those cases where they may be hatcheting legitimate users, and it makes me unlikely to use the service even if restated, as there seem to be far too many reasons (per the customer service rep himself) why an account could be flagged as suspicious or ‘anti-social’. No thanks…I wouldn’t risk building up a large community on such a service, only to be cut off from access to the service for violating TOS that are not clearly stated
This is a good thing as suspended accounts were mostly spam with messages sent out promoting pornography sites and such.
